Nigel P, our sock guy, had two new sock patterns to show at the October meeting. Using Cat Bordhi’s book ‘New Pathways for Socks ’ he chose first the ‘River Bed’ pattern which does the increasing up the bottom of the sock. Second he worked the ‘Upstream’ pattern which has the increasing on the top of the sock. Both pairs were knit in Hand Maiden yarns.
Nigel also had a beautiful vest he created using Noro Cash Iroha a blend of merino and silk. He made this for a friend who had shared the 600 kilometer Camino trek in Spain.
Integrated into the horizontal stripes, were arrows that were reminiscent of the arrows that marked the way throughout the trek. A beautiful memory captured in a great piece of knitting.
Mary S modelled a coat jacket she has been working on in between other projects since January. The pattern is from a Sirdar book – ‘A Collection of Arans’ and was knit in a rich turquoise/white blend of Denim Sport weight yarn. A warning to anyone trying the pattern - Mary had to do some major adjustments to the arms. She did a great job and the coat jacket looked warm and perfect for the great fall weather we are having.
Melanie B has been doing some test knitting for a cyber friend, Kerry Palm from Minneapolis, who has started to design her own patterns of baby clothes under the name Northern Palm Designs. She showed us a pattern named Claire, which was a beautiful, delicate cardigan done in a soft lavender yarn from Louet Gems. She also showed us Kerry’s other patterns which are designed for babies 3 months to a year.
Ritva is getting ready for Christmas and showed us two exquisite hand knit stockings ready for Santa to fill. The first was done in the traditional colours and designs of Christmas and the second stocking was a Aran pattern. Great work Ritva!
Janis W has been busy creating Seaman’s hats. This month she brought the most recent six hats she had completed. She also brought a copy of the pattern for sharing with anyone who would like to get involved in making hats.
Holli Y was wearing a beautiful sweater set done in Opal Sock yarn. The pattern started out as a free pattern from the Opal sock factory. But as the row gauge didn’t work and with other problems, Holli ended up designing her own pattern. The result was a beautifully fitted shell with the fitting done in the underarm panels - the front panels were vertical stripes. The jacket was done in the same style of vertical knit front and back panels and fitting/shaping done on the sides.
Valerie P chose a kit she found on the internet from the Tsock Tsarina. The end product was an elegant cranberry red stocking topped with a black lace and bead trimmed cuff. There were many challenges to completing the project including problems fitting the cuff and a certain cat that thought it would be a great toy.
Joan T had two garments to show us. The first was a cross over cardigan in Ocean Sirdar done in a warm, honey beige. Her second project was an open worked shawl. Joan chose Koigu yarn in red and burgundy tones to work this triangular shawl. The pattern, by a local designer was purchased at Three Bags Full.
Judy D has challenged the myth about knitting a sweater for a boyfriend. She showed us a very handsome vest created from a Pinqouin pattern in DGB Comfort and Emu Superwash yarns. The vest was done in a navy blue cable pattern at the waist, which became a houndstooth pattern in light blue and navy for the main body of the vest.
Linda H modelled the Diamond Fantasy pattern from Sivia Harding’s design collection. Linda chose a black Koigu yarn for knitting this elegant shawl.

Grace E knit a very cute baby set made from the Guild’s stash yarn. She had used brown and beige yarns to knit a striped sweater and matching hat.

Sivia H has been working on stockings as well and brought with her a thigh high lace work stocking knit in a rich blue Seduction yarn from Blue Moon Fiber Arts.
