Linda demonstrates her Knit Lite knitting needles at a WCKG meeting While shopping locally in mid-August, I spotted the new “The Knit Lite™” knitting needles which I had read about on the Internet. As my hubby and I were planning a September camping trip, I thought they would be fun to try at the campsite during the longer evenings. All summer, a few members of my Douglas Park knitting group had met outside every Monday evening to knit in the park.

I thought I would have a bit of fun one evening so just when the fading light was forcing us to pack up our knitting, I whipped out my lighted needles and said that I, at least, could keep on knitting. Of course, everyone had a good laugh and had to have a closer look at the tips of the needles where the light emits. At our campsites in Oregon and Washington, I pulled out my lighted needles (8 mm) and starting knitting a novelty yarn scarf. The needles have a very good point and the light certainly made knitting at night a novelty.

There is enough light to use as a “flashlight” to see if you have any dropped stitches and I even used them to check out the bushes when I heard sounds which spooked me! I wouldn’t dream of using them in a movie theatre, however, as I think people would be disturbed or distracted by the light.

After I got home, I found that knitting with the needles wasn’t as fun as when they were lit. One afternoon, when I just wanted to knit undisturbed, I sat quietly in our TV room in the basement knitting in the dark. After awhile my husband called down the stairs,
“Are you down there?”
“Yes.”, I replied.
“What are you doing in the dark?”
“Knitting.”, I replied, like it was a normal thing to do in the dark.

My husband came down and found me knitting away with my new lighted needles. Of course, he thought I was a bit nuts when I could turn on a light, but I was having a good time totally absorbed in my knitting. In the Fall 2006 issue of the Knitters’ magazine, I see there are now needles which are lit for the entire length. I can hardly wait to give those a try!
