My name is Linda Hull and I am starting my third, and optional, year under our new Constitution, as Vice President of the West Coast Knitters’ Guild. It is very difficult to describe the “duties” of the VP as this position is what you make it. By nature, I enjoy a challenge. I jump in where I perceive a need or I have the contacts and can make things happen. I am sure that working with our new President, Holli Y, will be different than working with our Past President, Paulette L, because they will approach their roles differently as well. Still, continuity is important so I’ve identified six “basic requirements” for the position.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

1) The VP should regularly attend the Guild meetings.

2) The VP should support/assist the President in her/his duties.

3) Chair the meeting if the President is away.

4) Attend Executive Meetings.

5) The VP is the “liaison person” with the program coordinator at the Oakridge Seniors’ Centre.

6) When approached, the VP should address member’s concerns or complaints. Try to work through those complaints, or bring them to the President’s or the Executive’s attention, or refer the questions to people best able to answer them.

The VP is encouraged to be a Guild “cheer leader” whenever and wherever possible. Pamphlets and business cards are available for distribution, and we now have a web site at http://www.westcoastknitterguild.org/.

I am looking forward to the move to the new location at the Oakridge Seniors’ Centre at the Oakridge Mall at 41st Avenue and Cambie Street in Vancouver, and not just because it is much closer to my home than Richmond is. The meeting room will have a more “social friendly” atmosphere as the seating is four people to a cafe table. We will have the use of a microphone so that everyone will hear the President and other speakers clearly. The members of the Oakridge Seniors’ Centre are welcoming us with open arms and we hope that some of their members will join the Guild. We hope too, that some of the Guild’s members, 55 years and older, will join the Oakridge Seniors’ Centre as they have a good “Calendar of Events” every month including exercise programs, movies, special speakers, quilting, bridge, etc. As well, they put on a reasonably priced lunch during the week. It was very difficult to find a suitable and, more particularly, an affordable location for the Guild to meet. The parking is ample and free, washrooms are handy, there is a kitchen available for water, we will have a locker for our needs, and the White Spot is just off of Cambie St. for a quick dinner before the meeting. The mall itself will be closed. Don’t let the “Seniors’” in the Centre’s name throw you off! The Guild is open to members of all ages. We expect our membership to grow based on conversations with many people who told us they wanted to join but didn’t want to drive to Richmond. We encourage our Richmond members to form carpools, just like we did, and not to drop out of the Guild because of the move to the location. We do not want to lose you and would miss seeing you at the meetings. Here is to a new knitting season! Cheers, Linda Hull
