Preparing Images
Your photos should be in a .jpg format and should be a reasonable size - both pixel size (max. 500 pixels in either direction) and file size (max. 150K). If your graphics editing software has a ’save for web’ option, that will probably be fine. Important: No spaces or odd characters in the filename, this is causing errors. Dashes or underscores are okay. If you would like help, please email the guild. Contact Us
Tools for working with photos:
- Picasa Windows only freeware program from Google
- IrfanView Windows only freeware program
- Downsize For Mac “..a utility that allows you to prepare images for the web by resizing, and adding watermarks, frames, and drop shadows. Batch resize an entire folder of images in bulk.. fully integrated with iPhoto”
- http://www.degraeve.com/blog-images/ Upload an image to make consistently sized images
Submit a Photo
Please submit your photos for our Gallery. Photos published in the Gallery will also be available for you to use in a post — see Placing a Gallery photo in your post at Writing a Post. Photos may be included in a post without submitting them for the Gallery, but instructions and support are not provided, and images will later either be transferred to the Gallery or deleted.
Submit a photo for the Gallery
- Click this link: Send a Photo for the Gallery. A new email will open with a bunch of text in it. You will be replacing (or deleting) all of the capitalized text.
- In the ‘To’ line is the address that your photo will be sent to. Don’t change it.
- In the subject line it says ‘
photo for gallery: IMAGE TITLE HERE’. You will replace ‘IMAGE TITLE HERE’ with your photo’s title. This title will appear with your photo, so make it intuitive, cute or amusing, and use normal lower and upper case letters, as you’d use for a title. - In the body of the email are a couple of things. First ‘
tags: TAG1 TAG2 TAG3 ETC’. Think of some tags, or keywords, to describe your photo.
What type of project is it? What is it made of and who designed it? Are you making it as a gift, or for a charity? If you want to identify it as yours, include your name or nickname as a tag (remember that this will be public).Replace each of the capitalized ‘TAGS’ with your own keywords. You need to replace all the capital letters here. If you don’t use them all, delete the rest. But leave the word ‘tags:’ in the email. Some tags will be added automatically so you don’t need to include them, currently these are ‘knit‘ and ‘wckg‘. If your tag is more than one word, put it in quoation marks. Here are some examples:
tags: cables "hand dyed" cardigan
tags: baby gift "Elizabeth Zimmermann" "Baby Surprise" nicoler
tags: lace shawl KAL "Jane Dough"
- Below this it says ‘
DESCRIPTION HERE REPLACE OR DELETE ALL CAPS’. The description you provide will also appear with your photo. It can be just a few words, or a few sentences. Be sure, once again, that you delete all the capitalized letters in the description area, and use normal upper and lower case letters in your description. - Important!: Send the photo as an attachment with the email.
- Click ‘Send’. Your photo will need to be verified before it goes on the website, so be patient. It will show up. If we need to contact you about your photo we will email you at the address you used to send it.
Tip: If your email application does not check your spelling, write your description in your favorite text editor first, then copy and paste it into you email.

What is the recommended photo size (pixels) and resolution (dpi)? Thanks, Holli
If you tag is more than one word, put it in quotes
Resolution - use 72dpi
Pixel size - probably no more than 500 px wide to fit our current page format; if you want something as big as possible I can check mor especifically. Height shouldn’t matter, the page will adjust to accomodate it.
By default, images in a post will be on the right with text flowing around it. Other options possible for advanced users.
Another tool for working with photos (free for home use) is FastStone (http://www.faststone.org/). I particularly like the red-eye removal feature, which is very intuitive to use, and works.
