Q: I am a knitter-for-hire / designer / technical editor / shop owner / author.. Am I allowed to put my information on the WCKG website?
A: Yes, under the right circumstances we welcome information about you and your knitting business. Please review these guidelines and contact us if you have any questions.
Do
- Join the WCKG
- Get your user account for the website
- Update your user profile to include information about yourself such as your name and your business website URL
- Participate on the site
- Request that your website be listed in our links - provide a title, URL, and description and specify which category or categories you may qualify for. Note: some categories are planned but not yet open. Every member is eligible for 1 link in the members category so start with that.
- Write interesting articles, and useful comments on other posts
- Submit photos - with titles, descriptions and tags - for our Gallery
- Request that your retail location be listed in our shops info
- Let us know about any events you are involved in that may be of interest to our members
- If the guild is currently maintaining a list of people available to do the kind of work that you do, provide your information in the appropriate format and be sure to keep your contact information current with the guild.
- Invite us to review your product
- Donate your time and/or product to benefit the guild, our members, and/or the charities we support
- purchase ad space in the West Coast Knitters’ News newsletter
Do Not
- Write posts or comments that serve no purpose other than to promote you or your business
- Include self-promotion in your posts or articles or comments
When it’s a grey area, such as a designer writing about the process of creating or publishing a design, make sure that the content is useful and interesting, and avoid any hint of a sales pitch. - Post comments anonymously or under an alias
- Violate our copyright or privacy policies
- Use guild membership information for commercial purposes, however well-intentioned, without first reaching a specific and limited agreement with the WCKG executive.
What if..
- Someone posted a comment looking for ___, which I sell. I can’t respond directly because their information is protected. What should I do?
- When you are responding, keep in mind what is going to be the most useful to the person who asked as well as anyone else visiting the site. You might reply with a comment that indicates general availability, suggests resources, and/or some pros and cons about the item. If you have put your URL in your user profile, your comment will be attributed to you and linked to the site you have listed.
- I am confident WCKG members and site visitors will want to know about my ___.
- Please check with the website editors. You could consider purchasing an ad in the newsletter, or sponsoring a specific project or event. You may not be permitted to post about your product/service, but you may want to provide information/samples for a non-affiliated guild member to try/review and write about.
- I want to post a link outside of the WCKG site.
- When it is appropriate to link, provide a direct/deep link (ie not to a home page but to the specifically relevant content) and a description. Posting a comment with essentially just a link to another site is generally considered spamming. A link is probably appropriate if it adds value to the post whether or not the link is followed and regardless of when the post is read. A link is probably inappropriate if it is self-promoting.
These guidelines are intended to be helpful but are subject to change and exceptions, and there will certainly be things that come up that we haven’t thought of, so please spend some time looking at the rest of the site, keep our audience in mind, and contact us with any questions, concerns, or suggestions.
